P-2 MARINE & FRESHWATER DISCOVERY CENTRE

We are delighted to offer the Preps, 1s and 2s their free excursion, with special thanks to the P&F and Sponsorship program. The P-2s will attend the Marine & Freshwater Discovery Centre in Queenscliff in Week 2 of Term 4. The event is now on Compass for parents/carers to give consent. There is no payment for the excursion as the event is being fully funded by the proceeds from our sponsors and Parents and Friends fundraising activities.

WORKING BEE - FRIDAY 18th OCTOBER

We will be running a working bee after school on Friday 18th October. Any assistance is welcome and will be much appreciated! There is a list of tasks we aim to complete on the afternoon as we continue further improvements and maintenance of our wonderful school environment. We will send out further information at the beginning of Term 4.

COMMUNICATION CHANNELS

As we continue to make improvements across the school, improving communication remains a strong focus as we endeavour to make school matters as easy and clear for everyone. I know how overwhelming it can be to be constantly inundated with emails and notifications and very quickly end up lost in a sea of messages, information and requests and then not be able to find the information you need.

Our newsletter remains key to ongoing announcements and updates. I strongly encourage all parents and carers, who do not already, to take a few moments every week to read through the newsletter as our intention is to use this as the central information source. Compass ‘Newsfeeds’ and ‘Event’ posts are used for more specific news items, and these will remain accessible while still important. Compass Calendar is a reference point for all school dates and events.

Emails can be sent directly to teachers through Compass. You can also contact the office via phone, email or in person and Kate and Gail will be happy to help.

In addition, I am excited about the development of our new-look website, which will soon be launched. The website is intended to capture and explain all aspects of Wallington PS, both for interested parents and carers as well as prospective families. Please note, that while Facebook has been used in the past, the school is no longer using this platform for official communication.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, the OHS team regularly reviews and enhances our practices and procedures, with safety paramount to all operations. Our focus is on creating a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors through comprehensive safety audits, emergency planning, first aid training, and compliance measures.

Recently, we conducted a review of our management strategies regarding extreme weather events, particularly in light of the damage sustained to nearby properties and council land. Extreme weather has always led to common sense safety measures, such as restricted play areas or indoor play, though there has not been an extreme weather policy at Wallington in the past. While Victorian government schools are not required to have specific extreme weather policies, we felt it was important to establish clear guidelines on safety measures in response to extreme weather events including lightning, hail, windstorm, dust or extreme high or low temperatures or any combination of these. As such, we now have a clear extreme weather policy (which will be accessible on the new website) that dictates when students will be required to remain indoors, including during dismissal times.

While there have been several examples over the course of the past few weeks where we have enacted our new policy, it is testament to our proactive approach to tree management, including thorough yearly arborist checks and maintenance, that the school did not experience tree damage during recent extreme winds.

Art Gallery

Year 1/2 - Banksy 'Love is in the Bin'

We watched Banksy's live auction of 'Girl with Balloon' artwork being shredded in front of an audience after being sold. This art work then became 'Love is in the Bin', and sold in 2021 for $36 million. To depict our own version of this art work students designed a gold frame and shredded their own artwork of 'Girl with Balloon'. Such a fantastic result! Well done 1/2s!
